Adolescence is perhaps the most perplexing period in one's life, for it encompasses the swift and abrupt transition from childhood to adulthood. It is the period during which teenagers relinquish the blithe callowness and innocence of childhood and embrace the pragmatism and the responsibilities of adulthood. While it prepares teenagers for the more complex challenges that have to be faced, it is the period during which they are most susceptible to making the wrong decisions and embracing a flawed perception of reality. Thus, a lack of proper guidance can have conspicuous consequences, often engendering a misconception of world's occurrences.

"The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾", by Sue Townsend, depicts this exact transition along with the perpetual agonies encountered by Adrian Mole, a teenager, who, considering himself an intellectual, expresses his views regarding his "successes" and disappointments, underscoring his self-centered attitude and lack of pragmatism throughout the book.

On the one hand, Adrian displays a flagrant haughtiness and callowness from the very beginning. His strongly held views and ostensible bigotry hamper him from truly comprehending the world and ultimately engender a selfish attitude towards certain occurrences. As he pursues his dream of becoming a writer his conviction that he is more knowledgeable and worthy of his friends and teachers' respect augments.

Moreover, his obsessive preoccupation regarding his appearance is the reason behind his inability to fully accept himself. He regards his imperfections as impediments that hamper him from being with the girl that he "loves", a girl that he had just met, named Pandora. His flawed perception of love is further emphasized by his hostile attitude towards the idea that Pandora's father is a mere milkman.

On the other hand, the teenager displays a certain amount of pragmatism when, acknowledging his disapprobation of his parents' hostile, reprehensible marriage and their behaviours he decides not to ever take them as role models. Furthermore, by the end of the book, after gaining substantially more experience he becomes a significantly more judicious and reasonable person.

To conclude with, "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾" is a book that depicts certain aspects of adolescence and the hardships that teenagers like Adrian Mole have to overcome in order to properly adjust to the world and ultimately proves that with proper guidance and the help of others any impediment can be easily overcome.
