SOCIAL HYPOCRISY AMONG MILLENNIALS
"There's nothing more dangerous in the world than honest ignorance and stupidity" - Martin Luther King
If millennials are so renowned for their compliance and responsiveness what is it then that makes them obdurately disregard the social distancing guidelines?
There is a certain social hypocrisy prevailing among millennials blatantly emphasized by their conspicuous callousness and obliviousness. The sense of invulnerability among them bolsters a myriad of impetuous decisions which ultimately jeopardize the lives of hundreds of other vulnerable people around them. Thus, on top of everything else, the recent coronavirus outbreak has been a massive social experiment, pressuring people to reassess the architecture of today's society, as well as their roles, as individuals, in it.
Moreover, though most younger adults can weather the effects of coronavirus and are less susceptible to developing severe cases of the disease, older people, with precarious health conditions, are at increased risk. The significant discrepancy between the current situations in Italy and South Korea strikingly underscores the imperative need for preventive measures. While South Korea's mass testing approach enabled an extensive containment of the virus, subsequently helping to circumvent an overwhelming of the healthcare system, the Italian authorities' tardy response engendered a collapse of the system, compelling healthcare professionals to make life and death decisions on a daily basis.
Therefore, since most countries do not have the necessary supplies to adopt an approach similar to the one adopted by South Korea, it is imperative that everybody, especially millennials who tend to be the most socially active generation, understand the outsized part they play in stemming the virus. Consequently, our obligation to one another on account of a profound interdependence must be regarded as a duty, one to protect not only ourselves, but also a plethora of other individuals around us.
Furthermore, together with Dr. Birx's statement: "Millennials are the core group that will stop this virus" the idea that millennials carry the greatest responsibility has become ubiquitous all over the world.
